At 1:45pm, RVFD along with Sta.600 (Greensboro), and CCDES PM-17 were dispatched for a hand-glider accident in the area of Oakland Rd and Racetrack Rd. As Chief-4 (Utz) checked up on the air, Caroline 911 advised that the incident was closer to the intersection of Oakland Rd. and Marble Head Rd. PM-14 (Lord/Tunis) arrived to find a hand-glider in a field at the reported location. As Chief Utz arrived, a second hand-glider was found to be down on the opposite side of the road also. Command was established, and quickly was assessed that the second hand-glider was uninjured. Crew of PM-14 quickly assessed the first patient and requested command to start aviation for one patient who was categorized as a "A", Priority-1 with multiple-trauma injuries. Incoming mutual aid units were assigned to assist PM-14, and establish a landing site for Trooper-6. As the incident progressed, command was advised of numerous other hand-gliders down in the area. Other units were deployed to those area's to investigate. Command also requested an additional Trooper to the area to perform an aerial search for other possibly down hand-gliders. Trooper-1 arrived and performed a search in 30 mile radius in all directions. Officer 617 (Gowen) was sent to Ridgely Airpark to retrieve additional information. It was found that an event was being held by the US Hand-glider Association in which numerous hand-gliders left Ridgely Airpark en route to Massey Airport in Kent County, then back to Ridgely. After Trooper-6 airlifted one patient to Shock Trauma, the accident scene was turned over to Maryland State Police. The command post was relocated to Ridgely Airpark to get accountability on other aircraft. After Trooper-1 reported no other finding's, command placed the situation under control, and released the remainder of the units.
