RVFD Member Injured in MVC
Wednesday, October 22, 2014

On October 22, 2014 Sta.300 (Denton) and RVFD for Squad-405, and CCEMS PM-13 were alerted for an MVC, reported serious, on New Bridge Road and Saulsbury Road.  Units arrived on location reporting a two vehicle MVC with one subject trapped, and requested availability of aviation.  Crews from Res300cue went to work on extrication, only to find that the subject trapped was a fellow Firefighter from RVFD, Firefighter Courtney Callahan.  Extrication was completed rapidly, with the patient being turned over to CCEMS PM-13 for further assessment.  Due to rain, MSP Aviation would not be able to transport FF Callahan.  The decision was made to transport to PRMC in Salisbury.

After further evaluation at PRMC, FF Callahan was taken to Shock Trauma by ground due to MSP Aviation being grounded because of rain.  FF Callahan was admitted into the Shock Trauma Center for over a week with multiple injuries to her right leg and possible orbital fractures.

At the time of submitting this story, FF Callahan has made extraordinary progress in rehabilitation, and is currently at home receiving therapy.  As her step-father,  her Fire Chief, her mother and  I cannot put into words the love support we have received from all the fire companies in Caroline County, along with family, friends, and of course our fellow brothers and sisters at RVFD.

A special "shout out" to Chief Douglas Higgs and his crew on Res300cue for the outstanding job on the extrication.  We are forever in your debt!
